Short Description

Assumes responsibility for advanced nursing practice within a clinical specialty

All duties and responsibilities must be accomplished in accordance with the New Jersey State Board of Nursing Guidelines for APN-App and in accordance with Cooper Hospital policy and procedures.

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in the Emergency Department (ED) and Urgent Care Centers (UC) should demonstrate clinical expertise in assessment of patients with various complaints. The UC/ED APN must have diagnostic reasoning skills and the ability to therapeutically manage a variety of medical illnesses and injury in a timely manner.  This position will include independent evaluation and formation of treatment plans by the advanced practice nurse.  Consultation by the attending physician will be available at all times and will be utilized at the discretion of the advanced practice nurse. 


The APN should be able to:

  • Perform a comprehensive history and physical exam of patients with both urgent and emergent conditions
  • Docment the patient encounter in a thorough manner in the electronic health record
  • Formulate a differential diagnosis and treatment plan for patients presenting to the Urgent Care and to the Emergency Department
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including diagnostic x-rays and basic lab tests including urinalysis, CBC and basic chemistries
  • Assess the severity of illness in a particular patient, and seek consultation and guidance from the attending physician if the complexity of patient’s condition warrants physician involvement or is beyond the demonstrated scope of practice of the individual APN
  • Communicate pertinent patient information to the collaborating/consulting physician when appropriate
  • Provide patients with discharge instruction and teaching with each encounter and direct patient to appropriate follow-up care
  • Perform patient follow –up calls per department protocols

Special Requirements

Scheduled Days / Hours: varies; Education: Masters Degree in Nursing. License (or Certification): Current New Jersey license as a Registered Nurse and APN License and a current AHA BLS certification.Must maintain certification by the New Jersey State Board of Nursing as an Advanced Practice Nurse. Certain assignments may require advance certification (i.e. ACLS, NALS, PALS).


Other Qualifications:

  • Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Prescriptive practice is based on the development of written joint protocols with the collaborating physician(s)
  • Received approval from the Nursing Credentialing Committee
  • These protocols are reviewed, updated and signed yearly.
  • Received approval from the Nurse Credentialing Committee
