The Oncology Data Specialist 1 (ODS1) performs assigned operations of the Oncology Data Services Department to meet the requirements of MD Anderson at Cooper University Health, the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), The Joint Commission, and state regulations.
The work done by an ODS1 contributes to maintaining oncology related accreditation status and ensures compliance with the New Jersey State Department of Health oncology data reporting legal requirements.
Oncology Data Specialist 1 main functions are abstracting, casefinding, performing follow up, participating in tumor board coordination and other duties as assigned.
1. Abstracting, Casefinding and Follow Up Skills and Responsibilities
1.1 Proficient, or developing skills to perform, abstracting, casefinding, follow up and other responsibilities of the Data Oncology Services Department.
1.2 Working knowledge of standard setting resources used in the Data Oncology field such as the American Joint Commission on Cancer (AJCC), NCI-SEER (National Cancer Institute-Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program), ACoS-Commission on Cancer (CoC), and New Jersey State Cancer Registry and the department Abstracting Guidelines.
1.3 Proficient, or developing skills to perform, abstracting, casefinding, follow up and other responsibilities of the Data Oncology Services Department.
1.4 Participates in ongoing oncology data specialist and related educational activities.
Achieve and maintain credential of Oncology Data Specialist (ODS).
2. Technical Skills and Responsibilities
2.1 Proficiency using Cooper and Department specific software and applications within 6 months of hire.
2.2 Informs manager of database issues appropriately.
2.3 Utilizes Excel to track progress of casefinding, abstracting follow up patient lists, and other weekly activity.
2.4 Clears case data edits or seeks assistance from team member.
2.5 Use and troubleshoot audio, video, and Microsoft teams related issues during Multidisciplinary Cancer Case Conference.
3. Accreditation Skills and Responsibilities
3.1 Develop skills related to accreditation programs by contributing to accreditation compliance. (Examples: performing assigned tasks such as verifying that accreditation related data fields are coded correctly, support the Cancer Registry Assistant with Multidisciplinary Cancer Case Conference, reviewing medical records for compliance with synoptic reporting, assisting with case review of quality measures, and other tasks as assigned.
4. Other Department Skills and Responsibilities
4.1 Receives training, development, and mentoring from manager and other team members.
4.2 Assists with maintenance of department policy & procedures.
4.3 Participates in team building and recognition activities.
4.4 Participates in state audits and participates in other state related activity as assigned.
4.5 Assists with coordination of, and partakes in, tumor board activity.
1-3 years’ experience working in a hospital cancer registry that included abstracting, casefinding, and follow up preferred.
Must have associate’s degree including clinical practicum in a CoC accredited hospital
Cancer Registry Management, Other Healthcare related.
Special Consideration: ODS-ready individuals have an Associate’s degree, completed clinical practicum, and are eligible to site for the Oncology Data Specialist credentialing exam.

Ability to abstract 3 or more body sites proficiently utilizing standard setting resources.
Experience using Metriq registry software and Epic medical record.
Experience with Commission on Cancer and other accreditation program compliance standards.
Demonstrate excellent time management, communication, and organizational skills.
Proficiency in the following computer applications preferred: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
Ability to work remotely or onsite.
