Overview

The Trauma/Surgical ICU (TSICU) is a 28-bed critical care unit specializing in the care of traumatically injured patients or those patients undergoing complex surgeries requiring close monitoring and care. Patients are admitted directly from the ED, the Ross Trauma Admitting Area, or the operating room. Patients usually cared for in this area include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. Many patients cared for the in the TSICU are poly-trauma, with injuries involving more than one body system. Common surgical patients include those undergoing Whipple procedures, esophagectomies, gastrostomies, and abdominal aortic aneurysms. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners, resident physicians and attending trauma surgeons. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the care of the trauma patient. 

Short Description

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), assists with patients’ activities of daily living and plan of care.

Communicates with and supports healthcare team, patients and/or patient’s family or significant other(s).

Maintains and demonstrates high standards of professional ethics.

 

1. Supports the activities of daily living to include bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting/hygiene, and assisting with mobility and transport. Demonstrates standard precautions including the care of patients in isolation and safe patient practice.
2. Performs technical duties as directed by RN, such as phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, Foley catheter care specific to population served and documents appropriately.
3. Identifies and communicates changes in patient’s status to RN and responds appropriately. Demonstrates standard precautions including the care of patients in isolation and safe patient practice.
4. Reinforces education of patient and family/responsible party regarding individual care needs and safety issues.
5. Participates in Cooper patient satisfaction initiatives and goals. Participates in the performance improvement activities. Assists in orientation of new hires.
6. Completes annual unit-specific competencies by specified due date.
7. Attends Staff Meetings when available for documents review of staff meeting minutes.
8. Assists in admission, transfers and discharges of patients to and from the unit

 

Looking for individuals that have an active EMT certification

0-2 years of experience preferred

Qualifications/Certifications

 

  • Successful completion of an unlicensed health care provider/ technician program
  • Completed at least one fundamental nursing course in an accredited RN Program
  • 1 year or more patient care experience in a similar role.

At least one of the above qualifications/certifications must be met for hire.

 

 

AHA Basic Life Support certification - required

 

Skills

  • Communication – Ability to communicate with patients, visitors and coworkers
  • Successful phlebotomy/EKG competency must be completed during orientation
