Short Description

The trained Surgical technologist, under the direct supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse and/or physician, is assigned as an assistant to specific service areas in the Surgical Suite.

Experience Required

  • One year of experience as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.
    OR
  • Employment as a Surgical Technologist in a healthcare facility prior to the effective date of NJSA 26:2H–12.62 (December 11, 2011).
    OR
  • Current service with the federal government, performing surgical technology duties as part of that role.

Education Requirements

  • Graduate of a nationally or regionally accredited educational program for Surgical Technologists.
    OR
  • Successful completion of a training program for Surgical Technology in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
    OR
  • Equivalent experience: Applies to individuals employed as Surgical Technologists (as detailed in the Experience section) prior to the effective date of NJSA 26:2H–12.62 (December 11, 2011).

License/Certification Requirements

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) Credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
    OR
  • Certification from its successor or another nationally recognized credentialing organization (e.g., National Center for Competency Testing [NCCT]).

Special Requirements

  • Must annually complete 15 hours of continuing education to remain qualified to practice as a Surgical Technologist in NJ
