Short Description

Responsible for overseeing the SPD technicians to ensure consistent use of proper techniques and adherence to the policies and procedures. Familiarity with operating room processes and instrumentation, case cart systems, and supply chain information/inventory control systems.  Monitors daily quality improvement measures and collects data and reports on such data. Formulates and recommends the operating and capital budget and controls the same.

 

  • Manage SPD technicians to ensure consistent use of proper techniques and adherence to the Policies and Procedures of the Department and the Hospital.  Counsels staff as necessary and follow CUHCR policy for disciplinary action.  Performs annual employee evaluations. Prepares and publishes two weeks in advance monthly work schedules.  Reviews and reconciles weekly payroll sheets.
  • Maintains adequate supply levels in SPD to assure availability of items needed for surgery and preparation of all instrument sets. Runs “Stock Reorder” on a daily basis in EHS. Physically check shelves to compare to suggested order. Assures the delivery of sterile and complete trays to the Operating Room and all user areas. Makes recommendations for reorder point changes based on EHS usage reports. Maintains Obsolescence Report to identify and remove dead inventory.
  • Monitors daily Quality Improvement measures and collects data on the following:
    • To be sure that each sterilizer cycle load has been reviewed and initialed at their conclusion.
    • Load record cards are filled out properly for each load to include sterilizer number, load number, and expiration date.
    • That a Bowie and Dick Test was performed on each sterilizer first load in the morning and that these results are acceptable.
    • That a challenge test pack is run daily and with each load that contains an implantable device.
  • Reviews all preference lists daily to monitor correct Operating Room patient billing for Orthopedic Implants and Supplies. Report this information to the Operating Room for follow up as needed.
  • Communicates pertinent information to the physicians, CRMC staff and sales representatives, as necessary.
  • Responsible for the annual Capital budget review for equipment in SPD. Responsible for making recommendations on an annual basis in preparation for department’s operating budget. Responsible for the monthly budget review of departmental spending.
  • Reviews daily instrument usage. Sends out for repair, sharpening or replaces broken or missing instruments as needed. Purchase new instruments as needed.
  • Prepares for Value Analysis Committee requested information as needed
  • Demonstrates commitment to a Culture of Patient Safety and High Reliability through use of and promotion of high reliability principles and the NJ STRONG patient safety behaviors. Engages in reducing unsafe practices and drives improvement in culture of safety through implementation of NQF and other best practices as appropriate for the discipline. Demonstrates commitment to achieving the highest level of performance for external benchmarking, (e.g., Leapfrog, payor based pay for performance, Medicare Star rating, etc.)
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Experience Required

  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience in sterile processing required; 6+ years preferred
  • Operating Room (OR) experience preferred with a working knowledge of all OR products 
  • Case Cart experience preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with patients, visitors, and coworkers

     

  • Sound knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology

     

  • Demonstrated competency of the use of computer applications, hospital information systems, encoder, and Microsoft Office applications. 

Education Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

License/Certification Requirements

  • CRCST and CHL certification required
  • CIS certification preferred
