Short Description

The Staff Community Doula is a member of the care team who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to patients and their families throughout the perinatal period. They enhance the patient experience by promoting comfort, communication, family engagement, and safe, timely escalation of concerns to clinical staff. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Function as a collaborative member of the care team, supporting patient-centered care while respecting clinical roles and boundaries.
  • Provide ongoing emotional support to patients and their families during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postpartum hospital stay. Offer reassurance, comfort, and advocacy aligned with patient preferences.
  • Assist with non-clinical comfort techniques, including positioning, breathing exercises, and relaxation methods to support labor progression and patient well-being.
  • Encourage family participation in the care experience. Support patients and families in asking questions of the healthcare team to promote understanding, reduce anxiety, and clarify care goals.
  • Maintain caseload of patients in the antepartum, labor and postpartum period.
  • Field work – expand home visits. Meet patients in the home and community settings including hospital and ambulatory clinical settings to deliver person-centered, community-based, culturally competent and linguistically healthcare services throughout the perinatal period.
  • Maintain detailed calendar and bookkeeping to ensure timely follow-up to patients and track activities.
  • Documentation must include all interactions performed by team members and completed in the electronic medical record.
  • Actively involved in community outreach and outreach programs.
  • Connect patients with community-based resources

Experience Required

0-2 years of experience required

 

 

Skills/Qualifications

Computer literate-email, Microsoft Office required

Experience supporting pregnant, laboring, postpartum patients preferred

Communication-Ability to communicate with patients, visitors and coworkers required

Registered and insured driver with a valid driver's license and a personal vehicle required

Education Requirements

HS Diploma/GED required

Completion of a NJDOH recognized doula training program

License/Certification Requirements

Doula training from NJ DOH Recognized program required

BLS from AHA required

Special Requirements

Part time, Varied Hours (Flexible)
